BODY WORLDS & The Cycle of Life opens December 23, 2024

The exhibition shows the body over time how it develops, matures and grows, reaches its climax and finally weakens. The "Cycle of Life" features a special presentation on the human life cycle and ageing – from prenatal development and infancy to youth, adulthood and old age. It presents ageing in the context of the human life cycle, as a natural progression from the spark of life at conception to living with inspiration into later years. Incredible feats and cautionary tales about age related matters, as well as the latest findings in longevity research are staged alongside real human specimens preserved through plastination.

Specimens on display stem from the Institute for Plastination’s body donation program and are preserved through plastination, a remarkable scientific process invented by pioneering anatomist Dr. Gunther von Hagens.

FAQ

frequently asked questions
What does BODY WORLDS show?

Each BODY WORLDS exhibition contains real human specimens, including whole-body plastinates as well as individual organs, organ configurations and translucent body slices. The spectacular plastinates in the exhibition take the visitor on an exciting journey of discovery under the skin. It provides a comprehensive insight into the anatomy and physiology of the human body. In addition to organ functions, common diseases are described in an easily understood manner by comparing healthy and affected organs. They show the long-term impact of diseases and addictions, such as tobacco or alcohol consumption, and demonstrate the mechanics of artificial knee and hip joints.

Who should see BODY WORLDS?

Anyone interested in learning what makes us human. Adults of all ages and children will find the exhibits fascinating. Given the nature of the BODY WORLDS exhibits, it is up to parents, guardians or school staff to decide whether BODY WORLDS is appropriate for the children in their care.

Is this exhibition appropriate for children?

ANIMAL INSIDE OUT was designed for visitors of all ages to better understand animal anatomy. Children and adults will be delighted when they discover curiosities about animals – like the reason why reindeers can navigate icy ground, what the giraffe's tongue is capable of, and why bulls have such strength. This exhibition provides an opportunity to see and learn about animals like never before.

What educational materials are provided?

Teachers will wish to prepare both their students and their adult supervisors carefully for their exhibition experience. Educator materials are available for download on the Teacher & Parents site. Please inquire about educator preview opportunities.

Can you take photographs or film in the exhibitions?

Please note that photography that may be distracting to other guests may be limited or restricted at any time.
